Escape – Original Sardine Run Oil Painting
Inspired by my fascination with the sardine run and the extraordinary behaviour of marine life, Escape explores one of the ocean’s most remarkable survival strategies: the instinctive movement of a school of fish as it responds to its surroundings. As a scuba diver, I am drawn to observing underwater animals in their natural environment, discovering how they move, interact, and react to the constantly changing world around them.
A bait ball is a fascinating example of collective behaviour. Thousands of sardines gather into a dense, swirling formation, moving together in an attempt to confuse predators and protect themselves. What fascinates me is the balance between vulnerability and strength — each fish is small, yet together they create a powerful, almost hypnotic movement.
In Escape, I wanted to capture this moment of concentrated energy. The school forms a swirling spiral against a luminous olive-green background, its turquoise, emerald, and blue bodies appearing to turn in a continuous current. The composition draws the eye towards the centre, while individual fish seem to break away from the formation, suggesting the urgency and unpredictability of the scene.

I use expressive impasto and palette-knife strokes to convey the movement I imagine and observe beneath the surface. The thick layers of paint give the fish a sculptural presence, while the surrounding marks evoke the shifting water and the energy of the school. The unusual green-gold palette reflects the way underwater light and colour can transform a familiar scene into something unexpected.
For me, Escape is more than a painting of fish. It is a reflection on instinct, adaptation, and the extraordinary ways marine life responds to danger. It invites the viewer to look beyond the individual and discover the remarkable intelligence of movement that emerges when a living group acts as one.

This original oil painting brings the energy and mystery of the ocean into a contemporary interior, offering a distinctive statement for collectors drawn to marine wildlife, expressive textures, and art inspired by the natural world.
