Not Alone in the Ocean – Original Sardine Run Oil Painting
As a scuba diver, I am fascinated by the complex relationships between marine animals and the extraordinary moments that unfold beneath the ocean’s surface. Not Alone in the Ocean is an original oil painting inspired by the sardine run, one of South Africa’s most remarkable marine spectacles. It reflects my interest in observing how fish move together, how predators interact with their prey, and how different species share the same underwater environment.

When a school of sardines gathers into a dense, swirling formation, thousands of individual fish move almost as one, responding to danger and changing direction in an instant. From above, this collective movement creates mesmerising patterns in the water. Seabirds diving towards the surface add another dimension to the scene, revealing the close connection between life beneath the waves and the world above. These encounters remind me that the ocean is never truly empty; it is a living, interconnected environment filled with constant movement and interaction.
In this painting, I wanted to capture the energy of that natural spectacle rather than reproduce a particular moment in documentary detail. The central formation of silver, charcoal, and white fish spirals through a vast expanse of turquoise water, while smaller silhouettes appear around it. The contrast between the intricate movement at the centre and the surrounding open water creates a sense of scale, drawing the viewer into the scene.

I use expressive impasto and sweeping palette-knife strokes to translate the movement I observe underwater into layers of oil paint. The circular brushwork echoes the turning school, while flashes of white suggest sunlight reflecting on the water. Working with texture and colour allows me to convey not only what I see, but also the excitement and wonder of witnessing marine life in its natural habitat.
Not Alone in the Ocean celebrates the interconnectedness of marine life and the extraordinary beauty of the sardine run. This original marine oil painting brings a sense of movement, depth, and connection to a contemporary interior, making it a meaningful choice for collectors who feel drawn to the ocean and its wildlife.
