Description
Underwater Coral Reef – Original Underwater Oil Painting
What happens to creativity when you leave the familiar world behind and begin painting underwater?
This original coral reef painting was created at a depth of 9.8 meters during a 72-minute underwater painting session. It is part of Olga Nikitina’s exploration of underwater painting, an emerging and fascinating direction in contemporary art that brings together fine art, scuba diving, and direct interaction with the marine environment.
As a scuba diver and underwater artist, I discovered that painting beneath the surface is an entirely different creative experience. The feeling of weightlessness, the absence of gravity, the constantly changing light, and the extraordinary colors of the underwater world influence the way I perceive my surroundings. Everything feels different. My brain seems to work differently, and familiar shapes and colors become something unexpected. Sometimes the intensity of these impressions feels like a visual explosion

My underwater oil paintings are intuitive rather than carefully planned compositions. I work with the feelings, emotions, and visual impressions of a particular moment beneath the surface. Instead of trying to reproduce every detail of the reef, I allow the underwater environment to guide my movements, colors, and composition. Each painting becomes a spontaneous interpretation of an experience that can never be repeated in exactly the same way.
In this underwater oil painting, the vibrant coral reef emerges through expressive layers of golden yellow, warm orange, magenta, violet, and green.il Above the colorful reef, cool shades of blue and turquoise suggest the movement of water and the changing underwater light. Bold, directional palette-knife strokes translate the energy of the environment into a dynamic composition, capturing the sensation of being surrounded by marine life.
I use the impasto technique to build a rich, tactile surface, allowing the colors and textures to create their own rhythm. This approach, which I call Underwater Impressionism, is about capturing the overall impression of being underwater rather than simply depicting what is visible.

The painting is signed by Olga Nikitina on both the front and the back. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a special Certificate of Underwater Painting documenting the depth and duration of the original underwater painting session.
This colorful original oil painting is an excellent addition to a contemporary art collection, particularly for collectors who appreciate marine life, coral reef ecosystems, scuba diving, and experimental approaches to painting. It brings the vibrant energy of the underwater world into an interior and offers something beyond a conventional ocean landscape: an authentic artwork created within the environment that inspired it.
