Kelp Forest Cape Town – Original Underwater Oil Painting

Inspired by my scuba diving experiences along the South African coast, Kelp Forest Cape Town is an original oil painting that reflects my fascination with the hidden life beneath the ocean’s surface. As a diver, I am drawn not only to the beauty of underwater landscapes, but also to the opportunity to encounter marine animals in their natural environment, observe their behaviour, and discover the delicate relationships that sustain underwater ecosystems.

Every dive offers a different perspective. I watch how fish move through kelp forests, how they respond to their surroundings, and how sunlight filters through the water, illuminating plants and animals in constantly changing shades of green and blue. These moments of observation and discovery inspire my paintings, allowing me to translate the atmosphere and movement of the underwater world into expressive colour and texture.

In Kelp Forest Cape Town, a school of silvery fish moves among tall, swaying kelp fronds. Layers of emerald, turquoise, and deep green evoke the richness of the marine environment, while flashes of light suggest the sun penetrating the water above. Rather than documenting a single moment underwater, I aim to convey the sensation of being immersed in this living world — its quiet energy, fluid movement, and unexpected encounters.

I use expressive impasto and palette-knife strokes to build the painting’s textured surface, allowing the paint itself to echo the movement of kelp and water. For me, this technique is a way to capture not only what I see while diving, but also what I feel: a sense of wonder, connection, and respect for the life that exists beneath the surface.

This original underwater oil painting brings the atmosphere of South Africa’s kelp forests into a living space, offering a personal connection to the ocean and a reminder of the extraordinary world that remains hidden beneath its surface.
